On the Cusp

We are on the cusp of Spring here in the high plains: warm sunny days followed by a dusting of snow or freezing rain overnight, causing raw cold mornings of clouds and glazed sidewalks. But technically, it's here.

On the cusp. What are you on the cusp of? The edge of transition? The verge of change?

The past 36 hours have shown some new activity on the cusp here in the USA, in daily politics. New Jersey Senator Cory Booker broke the record formerly held by bigot Strom Thurmond, decades ago in protest of civil rights, of time spent standing on the Senate floor consistently- over 25 hours! What did he talk about? He read stories of people who are frightened or have been detrimentally affected already by the new administration's actions - and those of the people being given license... Well, this is not a place to talk politics.

But it is a place to talk humanity. The elections in Wisconsin and Florida yesterday, while not making me profoundly happy. at least demonstrated a shift in sentiment on the part of the voters in this country. And that is just the legal voters in this country who are not yet disenfranchised. Add all the people's voices who are currently not being allowed to speak...

Humanity. Are we in a time of being on the cusp of regaining and reclaiming our humanity as a whole People? Perhaps. And maybe not.

But Spring is here, and regardless of political affiliation, we all should benefit from more light in the day, warmer temps - and of course I am talking from more northern climes- but it is my sincere hope that we also see a Spring in which regard for others, compassion, charity and humanity are reborn and tended carefully to grow across our local, state, national and global communities. After all, we are One and are only as strong as the weakest among us.

Please be kind, even if that begins with buying coffee for the next person in line, or keeping the leaves on the lawn until it's warm enough for the bees to thrive. And let that kindness spread. Find compassion. Look at someone through a different lens. Imagine what life feels like for someone who cannot fathom being kind to someone else, who has no real friends, who finds success only through empty dollars and empty promises.

Please be kind. Find compassion. Even if you have to begin with pity.

Happy Spring. Warmest wishes!
